My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A zombie tale with a difference!

Characters
It's very interesting to have a zombie as the main protagonist, I wasn't sure how well it would work but it was done in an extremely clever way. R the main character is strong, likeable and by the end of the story you feel real empathy for him. He is a character that you can understand even though he is faces extraordinary experiences. He is a character you really root for.
Julie is also a strong character within the story. The relationship between her and R is strangely believable and touching.
M is my favourite side character. He is so different to R but also so similar. He is tough the whole way through the story but softens by the end. Perry is one other character I would like to mention because he is so unusual. I wasn't expecting him to imgerge as an important character in the story.
I enjoyed the parallels with Romeo and Juliet throughout his story. It was done subtly and it took a while for me to spot the connections ( R- Romeo, Julie- Juliet, M-Mercusio and Nora- Nurse).

Plot
The plot was fast paced and grabs you from the first sentence. I found the story to be so addictive that it was an extremely quick read.

Writing
The world building was great as was the character development. I personally loved the gripping writing style. The pictures at the start of each chapter were also an interesting addition to the story.

In summary this story was fantastic action packed, with an unusual and touching love element. It is a must read especially with the film due out in February.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The kill order is the long awaited prequal to James Dashners fantastic maze runner trilogy. It endevors to explain the events that lead to the Thomas' adventures in the Glade.

Characters:
When I first heared about this prequel I was expecting it all to be about Thomas and the others from the original trilogy.
The prologue and the epilogue are the only hints at the original characters, the rest of the story follows new characters Mark, Trina and Alec (there are other characters but I would argue that these are the main three). We follow the story from Marks perspective.I generally enjoy story's told through a male protagonist and this one is no different. Mark is an interesting and believeable character. I found his and Alec's relationship particularly interesting.

Plot:
The plot was extremely engaging. I found it vey hard to put down. The chapters are short and punchy, this helps the story to keep its pace and the sense of action and impending doom. The book was completely action packed from beginning to end and it kept you guessing. The ending was quite unpredictable and beautiful. It made me desperate to re-read the maze runner trilogy, this is what a good prequel should do.

Writing:
James Dashner is an author who clearly takes time to understand his characters and to make them as real as possible. His writing is full of action but also heart. He makes you care about his characters and the world as much as he does.
This prequel felt as though it had a lot to say and seemed as though he had planned to write it right from the beginning. It managed not to seem like an after thought as a way to cash in from the success of the trilogy.

To summarise this is a fantastic book in its own right as well as being an amazing prequel to a sensational trilogy. I just wish there were more maze runner books for me to enjoy,

If you live in the UK I've found a great offer which might interest you! In Tesco I picked up the first two in the noughts and crosses sequence by Malorie Blackman for a total of £3.89. Love it! Tesco's books are always good value for money but their book packs are amazing!

I'm not going to give you the blurb for knife edge as it is the second in the series but here is the blurb for noughts and crosses:
Two young people are forced to make a stand in this thought-provoking look at racism and prejudice in an alternate society.

Sephy is a Cross -- a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a Nought -- a “colourless” member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood, but that’s as far as it can go. In their world, Noughts and Crosses simply don’t mix. Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum -- a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger. Can they possibly find a way to be together?

In this gripping, stimulating and totally absorbing novel, black and white are right and wrong.

Till next time, happy reading!
A great read! I would say it was tailored for the younger YA reader, but I'm 24 and still loved it. If you're thinking of buying this book I would suggest getting the hardback edition as it is a stunning book with beautiful illustrations. Its one to keep!

The cover is powerful in its simplicity. The colours used are very bold and intriguing. The background is white and the image and title in a blood red. I am currently reading this book and love the way the story is represented in its cover. A good example of this is the way the title looks as though it's been written in blood.
What covers have you been loving?
I'm trying out a new regular weekly post here on my blog. Each week I will show you one of my favourite covers. This week the cover is from 'Starters' by Lissa Price.
the cover was the first thing which drew me to this book. It's so unique with the blank white, the only hint of colour is in the eyes of the girl, also the mechanical looking surroundings glimmer in the light. This all makes it striking but the most interesting thing about this is the fact that by downloading a free app on your phone you can make the cover come to life. You hold your phone over the cover and you see the book trailer. This is a great little extra!
What is your current favourite cover?
Till next time :)
The first of a trilogy. This is another dystopian, it is told from the perspectives of the two main characters Day and June.

Blurb:
The United States is gone, along with its flooded coasts. North America’s two warring nations, the western Republic and the eastern Colonies, have reached a breaking point. In the midst of this broken continent and dark new world are two teenagers who will go down in history....
Born into the slums of Los Angeles, fifteen-year old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. A mysterious boy with no recorded image or fingerprints. A boy who should no longer exist. A boy who watches over his family until one evening, when the plague patrols mark his family’s door with an X—the sign of plague infection. A death sentence for any family too poor to afford the antidote. Desperate, Day has no choice; he must steal it.
Born to an elite family in Los Angeles’ wealthy Ruby sector, fifteen-year old June is the Republic’s most promising prodigy. A superintelligent girl destined for great things in the country’s highest military circles. Obedient, passionate, and committed to her country—until the day her brother Metias is murdered while on patrol during a break-in at the plague hospital.
Only one person could be responsible.
Day.
And now it’s June’s mission to hunt him down.
The truth they’ll uncover will become legend.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4067483035894029168.post-48108700577391456222012-05-08T11:37:00.001-07:002012-05-08T11:37:46.628-07:00Black Dawn by Rachel Caine review!Black Dawn by Rachel Caine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Basic overview:

This is the twelfth Morganville vampire book and I'm not remotely board of the characters and I'm still excited about the rest of the series. This book was no let down.

Characters:

I have loved the main characters from the very beginning and they just seem to grow and develop as real people would. When reading this book at no point did I feel the characters did anything which didn't fit with my view of them. My favourite characters have to be Shane and Myrnin but I also like the main character Claire. She isn't a damsel in distress like some other female leads in vampire books which I like.

Plot:

The plot felt believable for the setting and didn't feel at all contrived I understood in the context of the characters why certain things happened. It flowed well with the rest of the series and allowed for more to follow.

Writing:

This is the only section of the review where I will moan. I like most of the features of Rachel Caines writing the only downside is as I'm reading it there are points when I know I'm reading something someone has written. This may sound stupid but I'm sure all avid readers know, when your reading a great book it feels real and natural and not a contrived piece of fiction. Rachel Caine continually uses the phrase 'then they look at me as if they hadn't seen me before'. Trust me she uses it a lot and it comes from different characters voices so it felt written and not natural.

I also am not sure I'm keen on the fact that she has started to flit between characters perspectives with each chapter. It's a good idea but does show up some flaws in her writing
This is a dystopian book which has been compared to the hunger games. It is about a boy who wakes up in a lift and doesn't remember anything but his first name. He ends up a place called the Glade where he meets a group of other boys called the Glades who know just us much as Thomas the main character does.
When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls.

Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift.

Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers.

Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.

I will be honest I did find this series hard going in places. I didn't enjoy Shiver (the first in the trilogy) as much as the other two which is unusual for a series.

The books are about a pack of werewolves who change to wolves in cold weather and do not turn back until they are warm enough which basically means they are wolves throughout winter and humans during the spring and summer. This transition continues until they have been werewolves for around 15 years then they stay wolves forever.

The main characters are Sam (a wolf) and Grace (the girl who loves him). We also meet Cole and Isabel later in the trilogy.

The book is written from the perspectives of all of the main characters. Which is very interesting but also can become confusing at times. I also would like to add that the chapters are all very short which I like as I like to stop reading at the end of a chapter.

I would give this series 3.5 stars.
The third book in the Shiver trilogy. I have just read the other two and am enjoying the last one. The trilogy is about werewolf pack and a girl obsessed with the wolves, well one wolf in particular. The romance in this book is extremely well written and believable. I will do a full review of the series when I have finished this the last installment.
First 'I know what you did last summer' by Lois Duncan. This book was a easy read and at only 211 pages it was also a quick read. It is very different from the film. This book is more of a thriller than a horror. I wouldn't really recommend it was it was pretty forgettable.

I have literally just finished Ultraviolet by R.J Anderson. This was a great book. It goes pretty weird in the last few chapters and you have to trust the writer to pull it back, I think she manages it! The first and last chapters of these books are extremely powerful. The story is about a girl with a fascinating condition called synesthesia (this is where people associate colours or tastes with different words, numbers and letters).

The blurb reads:
Once upon a time there was a girl who was special. This is not her story. Unless you count the part where I kill her.

If you don't want to read the book after that your harder to impress than me!!

Happy reading!!
Till next time :)
This is the book the film was based on. Its nowhere near as gory though and it is more of a thriller than a horror. So far I am enjoying it although I don't think I will be reading it again. I will do a review when I finish it will be soon as I only have 2 chapters left.
A few days ago I finished reading the eleventh book in the Morganville Vampire series (Last breath by Rachel Caine). I finished it in around four days which must mean it was a good read.
I don't want to give away too much about the book or the series but I will tell you that it has masses of action and some very emotional parts. The characters and really believable and half way through the first book you feel as if you really know them!
I have really loved reading the whole series of books and recommend them to everyone who enjoys Vampire fiction.

There are a lot of books in the series as you can see and the author has promised at least two more, but don't let that put you off. I'm far from being bored of them!
If you live in the UK I should let you know that you can get books 1-10 in The Works as part of their 3 for £5 deal. That's were I got most of mine!
